How did you get the rubber housing off? I was able to splice one of the wires and get my hatch working again, but there's still a few cables that are worn out that I can't get to with the rubber thing in the way.

You have take all this off if you going to run me wires. I recommend that you do all the wire just cuz they will all brake and rap all the wire back up.

Has two screws ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347132314.874997.jpg

All clips ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347132344.113180.jpg

Clip to take it of ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347132377.138566.jpg

Just Pull it down ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347132410.239116.jpg

You have to take off the 3rd brake light to get to the connecter comes off from the top down and it has clips on the in sideImageUploadedByTapatalk1347132441.773447.jpg

Yup,
but you are lucky, 2009 has removable taillight,
2007, didn't, I had to splice that one!

I assume you are referring to the Center High Mounted Stop Light?
It is not model year related, it is a Rabbit vs GTi / r32 difference.
The incandescent CHMSL on the Rabbit is removable for bulb replacement.
The LED CHMSL on the mk5 GTi / r32 is glued on.
While VWOA warranty replaces a defective LED CHMSL for 10 years unlimited mileage,
that won't help on the harness fix.

Ugh, pretty sure I have this same problem. Started up my car this AM and the MFD said that both my reverse lights were out. Sure enough my rear wiper and trunk release both no longer function either.

An interesting thing that led up to this, twice over the past week when I've been at a stoplight a low frequency "bad ground" noise would blare from my sub, I just assumed one of my sub's cables came loose. More likely it was attributable to me having the brake lights on for a long duration and a grounding issue in the wiring harness.

I'm planning to open up the rubber boots this weekend to see what's going on. Really don't want to deal with he BS of changing out the whole harness. Tho this does seem like it's a potential fire hazard and something that VW should look into if it's really widespread...

For the record I have an October build 2008 GTI with 98k miles.

Took a look at the damage this weekend. Two wires had exposed wiring and one was completely severed. I reattached the wire and used some electrical tape to prevent shorting. Going to avoid using the hatch until I figure out what to do next.
