Magnetic Oil Drain Plug: Your Underappreciated Friend

So, changing the oil yesterday, and found this on the end of my magnetic oil drain plug:



Yep, valve keeper :frown:

Since this could lead to catastrophic engine failure if the valve worked its way into the engine, did this:



to the dealer.

The valve cover has never been off this car. And no one I have spoken to has seen this happen on a FSI. There is a chance its been in the engine for the last 68K and only decided now to make its appearance. Or...

But if it is from one of the valves, and we caught it in time, then that little magnet just saved my engine.

I had a similar experience with debris in the pan and won't ever run without a magnetic plug again.

well, not such good news...



valve spring broke. valve and head are toast.

not the turn of events I was hoping for.

While the head is off, you could always ask for a complete valve and combustion chamber cleaning. Be a heck of a lot easier if the valves are actually removed.
