This is a question of sport feeling vs daily practicality. I think most of us here have at least struggled with this dilemma. The GTI does a better job of meeting both needs than most other cars, and so that's why we ended up with a GTI. That's still true for me today after having my GTI for 9 years so that's why I keep mine. Only other car I'd consider is a Golf R or or an Audi hatch/wagon.

Just do what you feel you need to do. You could always come back to a GTI if it's not for you.

We don't have the Scirocco here either, but if we did...many would sell. We have enough Golf models and I would rather, instead of the Golf R, have the Scirocco R as our AWD performance VW option.
The Scirocco R is not AWD.

OP, you never drove an S2000? Don't go the 0-60 times, since that's by dropping the clutch at an extreme RPM. Take off normally and I'll put my money on a stock 2007.
