To move or not to move?

i think getting it off your chest is the right thing to do. You need to be open with your concerns. I think my point is more that there is little to be concerned about here. It does not appear she is making a reckless decision.

I think her saving money is just part of the equation that's adding up to your anxiety. Another part is probably living with another room mate, and how her social life might change now living in Hobo and being so close to the city.

And yes, I know a ton of friends and co-workers around our age that's still living at home. Rent and housing in the Tri-State area is expensive compared to what people pay in other parts of the US.

There is nothing sad about this. It is awesome. Go forth and be awesome with her.
:)

Oversensitive much?

Please explain how saying women manage money differently, is somehow sexist.
I don't see how you can just say women in general manage money differently. Every human being is different and does their own thing, regardless of sex? That's like saying a man can't be a stay at home father.

I don't see how this is over sensitive.

Not to worry. Worst cast scenario, she can work the pole (poll?...powl?...etc.) to make ends meet. Plenty of clubs in NYC. Need pics to confirm whether this is a feasible option.

Man...why are you freaking out so much? It's not like she has a gambling problem and steals your money to go buy crack. You didn't stumble across a sex tape on a porn site where she was gang banged. She is growing up. Next chapter in life. That takes balls. There is no guarantee that this is going to work out. There is also no guarantee she won't get hit by a bus tomorrow. That's life. Rid yourself of this selfish nonsense and get excited for her or risk jeopardizing what you have.

Prob best advice in thread.

Seriously, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Give her props for wanting to take the plunge and go out on her own. Time to cut the cord and start learning from the School of Hard Knocks. Besides, it's just a one year lease within an hour driving distance...she isn't moving to Saudi Arabia.

Didn't you say you still live at home? Probably has a lot to do with you being uncomfortable with the situation. Be careful, too much uneasiness from your end and she might interpret that as you being a momma's boy that's afraid to leave home.

Thanks.

I'm not afraid to leave home. She knows this too. If it wasn't for her commute, she'd most likely be staying home as well...as most of both of our groups of friends are. That's just the way it is now. She knows I don't like debt, and knows I save money. She does not have a problem with me at home. :)

Not yet, but it's the next chapter in life. Once she gets her own place, how long do you think she'll be cool with you still living at home with mom and pop? Just giving you a heads up. It'll get old fast. Things will change when she moves out and has her own place. Be ready.

Maybe you know this subconsciously and that's why you're kinda against the move in the first place?

Different set of responsibilities and priorities being out on your own. Much like many things in life, you only really "get it" once you experience it.

Generalizations like this one, based on gender, are sexist by default. Woman 1 and Woman 2 are as likely to manage money differently from each other as Woman 1 and Man 1 are.

I have never spent $100+ on a handbag. Therefore men and women manage money differently.
