Why are you worried about the GTI breaking down? History or rumors? I have an '08 and work in the Twin Cities... I have mine all sorted out now and never hesitate to drive it 140 miles a day commuting.
I wouldn't buy a Chevy if it was the last car on the planet, but that's just me.

I thought you were considering a turbo model. Those are at least quick and can handle. The GTI won't bankrupt you over maintenance if you learn to do everything yourself, which isn't that hard--millions of complete idiots all over the world have become professional mechanics.

Dont do it. Keep the gti. I have an 06 with 189,000 miles on it and i drive it back and forth between el paso tx to phoenix AZ and has never left me on the side of the road. Actually it has never broken down on me.

Also won't the Cobalt be rusting out on you any day now? We don't really deal with that in NC, but my snowbelt friends say that American and Japanese cars rust really bad up there.
