Replaced ignition barrel now car is in safe mode

Hi folks. I had the common issue of the key not being able to turn the ignition in my 1.6tdi mk6 golf. I got a 2nd hand barrel and key, replaced the old one with it but now when I try to start it it runs for a second or two then cuts off saying safe on the dash. Any ideas why and how to fix it ? Thanks

You'll need to have the key programmed to the car. Or take the pill out of the original key and replace it in the new key
