European Headlight Switch Question

I'm really considering buying this switch in place of the stock one that I have now:

http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Golf_V--2.0T/Search/Switch/ES9974/

But, if I buy and install this switch, would I need VAG-COM to make the new features work? The switch I have now has three options: off, on, on w/fogs.

Btw, I'm terribly sorry if this is a dead topic..

if you want to run city lights only which is what this switch is for then yes. Use vagcom to delete your drls. Theres also a rear fog click so that would also require vagcom and a trigger wire to activate.

I just noticed you are in Cincinnati, OH. If you need VAG-COM assistance, I can hook you up.

As UGFast89 states, with US instrument setting,
disabling DRL with VAG-COM is your only choice
to obtain function from the city light position of the euro switch.

However, if you set the instrument cluster to the EU (or GB) country setting,
disabling DRL is no longer a necessity. (Of course, that requires VAG-COM as well.)
DRL will cancel when a euro switch is set to city light position with euro instrument setting

Not that anyone is desperate to keep DRL

Since I never use the fog lights at night (they are useless in real fog and otherwise just annoy oncoming drivers),
thought I would get some kind of use out of them as DRL lights

One of the other benefits of non-US instrument setting is you can VAG-COM
to enable both FTPs and HID hi-beams together when hi-beams are selected.
Great for deer spotting / avoidance on empty roads.
This can not be done with US instrument setting.

and I only do this if someone really pisses me off

my only point is, once you have VAG-COM access, there are options to consider

You can not have just fogs and city lights as DRL.
The setting that provides that (Scandinavian DRL) also illuminates
the rear running / parking lights and license lights too.
You can have just fogs as DRL.

Click on any of the front lighting pictures in my post above.
The linked thread includes the information you need to set fogs as DRL.
It also includes the information to make DRL cancel
with a euro switch in "city light" position (EU instrument setting).

Is there any physical wiring connections you need to make for all of the settings you created or was it all done via vagcom?

My stock halogens are yellowed and faded to the point where i can't see at night and it is time to replace them so I am looking at getting projector headlights and maybe doing an HID conversion.

All done with VAG-COM, nothing more than flipping digital switches
