check engine light randomness

anyone else have issues with their check engine light popping on every once and a while and just going away a day later? just curious if this is common.

Yup, scan the car with Vag-com and it should pull up an error code. Mine was the N80 valve going bad, not an uncommon thing.

There are many DTCs that automatically reset themselves based on a reset counter. Once the condition that triggered the DTC doesn't occur in a given number of drive cycles, the CEL will extinguish.

You'll need to scan the car with VCDS (VAG-Com) to see what the CEL is about.

Well the light came back on and my rpms are bouncing all over the place and I have a 1500 mi drive ahead of me......

You've got an FSI engine -- when was the last time you checked the cam follower?
