Looking to get a DSLR

Christmas is just around the corner and I'm thinking of getting myself a DSLR. I want to start doing photography as my new hobby. I know nothing about DSLRs or photography for that matter. Right now I'm looking at the Cannon EOS Rebel T1i or XSi Are these good cameras? My price range is in the $500-$750...what are other good entry level DSLRs in this price range?

Get a D40.
Than start buying lens, tripod and all the other accessories.

I eneded up ordering the Canon T1i from B&H today.got 3% bing cashback and 50 mail in rebate totals out to be $637..which I think is a hell of deal compared to the other sites selling it. Thanks for all you input!

don't know anything about dslr's, but have heard great reviews on the xsi and D40's

Get the XSi, if you want video capabilities then go with the T1i.

Refurb or used Canon 40D with standard kit lens 28-135mm IS.... It's only 10.1 mp but that should be plenty unless you plan on doing 20x30 and larger prints often.
