That spoiler is actually needed if you want to make a racecar out of our golf. The back end at high speed gets lift, because of the hatchback design so you need downforce on the back axle to prevent that instability from happening.

I suppose that could make sense...but what's it doing driving around Washington DC, and getting towed away on a tow truck? I watched the whole thing....
