Car wash guy messed up my 6 speed trans

He told me he couldn't put it into reverse to he just pushed the car to wash it and, of course, denies causing the issue.

At any rate, I pulled the shift boot and found a broken plastic bit. I don't know the name or if it's the only part that's broken but here is a crude picture that I can provide at the moment to give you a better idea.

What's it called, can I order it or do I have to replace the shift box?

Symptoms: can't go into reverse and feels like it's in 4th or 5th while the know is set to 1st 2nd or 3rd .

Try finding one used on car-part.com. Not sure what you would call it but you could look up different parts from a MKV and call the yard to see if they have that part

Ugh....I HATE car wash places. One here dinged my OEM wheels up, never gone back since.

Dude probably tried just forcing it into reverse without pushing down to disable the lock-out. I'm sure most people do not have a clue how to operate it unless instructed or if they've driven a manual trans VW before. I know I didn't know initially when I test-drove my first VW. If you ask me, the damage is clearly their fault and they should have to stand behind it.

Can you describe where exactly it came from? check out dieselgeek for replacement cable bushings and the first gear getter. also replace the main shifter pivot bushing andshim it with cardstock.
