The tensioner is on the list of things to do. If I go in to do the water pump and thermostat I'll get it done. A lot of the tensioner issues are related to oil consumption. It's hydraulically actuated and they you get low on oil pressure due to any number of factors, the chain gets sloppy.
A local tech says he sees the tensioner issue tied into a leaky rear main seal on a lot of tsi engines.

No, Those are coincidences. The rear main seal is basically junk and isnt sprung like every other mfg. Those failures are mostly related to the junk pcv.
The tensioner fails only on shutoff, when conpression turns the engine over backwards. Inside the tensioner is a part that has three teeth, one or two of those break causing the slack. These engines cannot be turned backwards, they will skip teeth. When the tensioner fails, most of the time you get a new part and re time the engine. Sometimes not.
