side mirror turn signals

Does anyone know why we have the side mirror turnsignals that are like 6 inches long but we only have one or two LEDS in the housing? It doesn't all light up at night like the mirrors on a mercedes benz. I was just curious if anyone else has noticed this. Initially I thought it was a cold cathode ray tube but it is just one led apparently:iono:

I imagine it's a purely styling based decision. The contour line from the hinge point carries all the way out along the top of the signal lens.
