Seat Refurbishment

I'm not a big guy or anything but the drivers seat has seen better days.

I noticed what looked like a ton of bread crumbs in the rear passenger footwell and found that the foam stuffing on the left hand cushion had ripped so the support wire doesnt have anything covering it.

Short of getting a whole new seat, is there any way to replace the cushion or anything?

I know there's this thread on seat disassembly but I'm not sure if there are any cushion replacements available anywhere.

I haven't seen a cushion replacement thread but before you resort to buying a seat see if you can find a wrecked GTI in a junkyard to take a seat out of.

Have you shown the seat to any upholsterers? Maybe someone can fix it.

I have same problem. I plan on keeping my car so I will have my front seat re-upholstered. You can by a new cover from VW for 390 and I plan on having an upholsterer rebuild the foam. Afterall the foam has had 6+ years of me getting in and out so it is time to replace it. The other seats get little or no use so they will go longer but foam in general starts to disintegrate as it gets old and just crumble.

How are you going to address the seat weight sensors embedded in the seat bottom foam of both front seats? How about the side airbags? I would make sure the shop knows how to set up VW sensors, and checks to make sure there's no fault codes when they're finished.

Basic settings on the seats to reset the values. And to reupholster a set isnt hard. The only special tool you may need are hog ring pliers. A technically adept person could have it done in about 2-3 hrs taking your time....

Here shows the OEM part number EDIT: Confirmed to be PN: 1K0881375

Going to call and confirm this info. If real, I'm going to get it and take pictures of the install.

  1. Only doing driver's seat
  2. Weight sensor isn't in driver's seat
  3. Side airbags are in seat back, not seat
  4. Only sensors in driver seat that could fault are airbag, seat belt, and seat belt tensioner

Hey good luck, doesn't look too hard. I am lazy and I have to do seat back as well and I want all foam replaced/upgraded so I am going to let the professionals handle it. Cost will be high but outcome should be what I want. The upholstery back and bottom from VW was like 390 so I will have a fair amount of labor and foam. Probably cost me 800-1000. Maybe I should just find a set of R seats to put in if they plug and play all sensors.... which they probably do not.

I'll add my $0.02

I wanted to just swap the padding from the passenger's seat to the driver's and keep the worn seat cover in place. What i found when taking the seats apart, was the padding is glued to the covers and I also found that the padding was starting to crumble as well.

it looks like purchasing a new pad is the way to go. I would recommend getting 3M headliner repair adhesive if you want to reuse the cover. It works great. i used it to reupholster my mountain bike seat.
