Rear view camera install

Just wondering if I can hook a backup camera to a constant live at the rear of the car instead of a dedicated reverse trigger wire ( I cannot find the reverse wire) and then have a toggle switch at the dash when I want the radio to go to reverse screen. I have a Mk5 GTI

From an electronics standpoint I guess ... why not?

You'd need to run a whole other wire to the front wouldn't you? Seems like more work than just finding the wire.

Reverse wire is not that hard to trace, just start at the bulb. I wish I could remember the color in mine.

Random tidbit of info: I could never get a "clean" signal on mine, I ended up building a relay harness and hiding it in the inner fender that switched the relay on when reverse was detected. Picture was much clearer and cut on/off much faster like this.
