Having had the R for 13 months, it's tough going back to the 335i, which is twice the cost but definitely not twice the value or fun. Bimmer rear drive and balance is priceless tho.

My R has been off road for 7 days now and I'm still waiting. I will stick with it tho.

Hope the R comes back soon and you can enjoy driving it. Shortly, you would be able to get a 135, which would not be twice the price but it was not available in Australia previously

Ready to race!
Hi Blur, my springs and struts were replaced by VW after steering produced frontend cluncking noises. There is a VW TSB for this. The new springs and struts also somehow removed the groans/moans when braking and steering at slow speeds but I'm not sure if they were related. Cheers Donald

Thanks mate

I posted some stuff up on watercooled 12 months ago about this, but at that stage the only notification on the bulletin was for the springs....think I'll go visit my dealer again.

Good luck with getting her back on the orad....don't give up just yet, there is nothing else for the money with the character of these things!

A real R32. The serious-looking & sounding MkIV  :headbang:

Dude, you live on the central coast AND own a Peugeot... if we wanted to hear the opinion of an arse, we'd post a farting noise.

My neighbour Ray has done 5500km on his new 5 dr R32.
Apart from some minor interior defects easily rectified - car has not missed a beat.

No problems with the springs, OEM sway bars or aftermarket H&R bars.

All good.

Maybe just a bad batch.

The MKIV R32 no longer compares to the new MKV R32 - Old news.
MKIV was overpriced & underdone in both GTI & R32.
After importing a good batch of MKIV R32 (150 I think) at crazy inflated prices; VW was stuck with them about the time the regular MKIV Golf (TDI/FSI) hit the market - Big discounts were offered to clear stock.

I think VW learnt their lesson in OZ after the MKIV pricing blunder - buyers that initially paid good money were burnt.

Both MKV GTI & R32 have sold like hotcakes so far due to fair pricing & excellent performance.

Cheers

The MK4 GTI was an embarrassment to the motoring world. Why I spent close to 40K for that car I will never know :hitcomputer:

Although the the speakers in the doors sounded great...

You guys  Making logical arguments with a Mk4 R owner is like sticking your dick in a blender. It's loud, makes a lot of 'whizzing' noise and ultimately ends in severe pain and irreversible damage to a precious organ.

Having changed the mecatronics (spelling) and whilst waiting for the new transmission to be delivered, VWA gave me a boat to drive around town  It's new, clean, free and one sure way to cause me to miss my R.

Btw, Chatswood Classic/2 consultants have been fabulous with my warranty issues, with the new springs/strut, pump/filter and now transmission.

"The MKIV R32 no longer compares to the new MKV R32 - Old news."

Disagree WJ. After pouring over the MkV, I chose an immaculate 2nd hand MKIV for its fat sills; pumped guards; large front air scoops; IMO, gorgeuos 'OZ's; awesome Konig front seats; rear valance with bad air tubes either side which in turn gives me more boot space over the shallower MkV's. And, as with the GTI, I couldn't live in that cave of Anthracite. Just grates the nerves. Prefer the MkIV's charcoal lower & light grey upper trim contrasting colour combination.

The MkIV is individual & looks like a serious bit of kit yet still that very appealing MkIV shape whereas the MkV just looks - without pumped guards & sills & with that chrome grille - like a blinged MkV Golf with after market rims.

Mind you, would very much like a sun roof.

"MKIV was overpriced...."

At release, agree.

"....& underdone in both GTI & R32."

Disagree. Assuming both models aren't Monday a.m. or Friday p.m. build, I believe there's bugger all between them performance-wise. And to my ears, the MKIV has the edge in sonorous pornograhy.

"After importing a good batch of MKIV R32 (150 I think)...."

All up, 200 were imported. I can't comment if you're saying that after the 1st 150 were sold, sales fell away. Perhaps they did.

To sum up: no denying that they - & the GTI - are great cars separated by our personal preferences.

Das Silberun Teufel,

Well written extract.

If we agree to disagree; that's fine.

I'm not saying that I don't like the MKIV version.

Just pointing out that that period of time the MKIV had to deal with a higher import tax regime and heavy competition.

In respect to the 200 imported:

They were imported very late towards the end of that model cycle.
The first 50 were sold - with 150 having to be discounted heavily; hurting the original 50 owners who paid full price.

Remember that Holden cut price of their ill fated Adventurer 4WD wagon; only Holden sent the previous purchasers cheques in the mail for @ $3500 once the Ford Territory hit the market.

Mitsubishi made similar blunders with importing the Lancer EVO (not sure which variant). They wanted something like $75-80K, which had many sitting in the showroom as the WRX was 40K and STI 60-65K.

With the MKIV GTI - VW did not have much choice on pricing.

When I first moved to Sydney just over 10 years ago; looked at MKIV Golf std 2.0l - $35K on road. 10 years later same car is same price - again, market dynamics, import taxes, origin of build and company view on market dynamics.

Its no secret that manufacturers like Mitsubishi for instance, make 3 times the profit from their vehicles sold in the Aus market as opposed to home market or North America. Hate to think what profit BMW make as a 330ci is same price as Subaru Liberty GT in South Africa - here its almost twice the price on road.

I think VW was looking to gouge the market with the MKIV R32.

I had read in one of the Euro mags a comparison between the MKIV & MKV R32. MKIV wins out in interior quality; but not much else. Interior of MKV has been considered a sideways step rather than an improvement to most. Still better than new WRX or new EVO.

That's life - every model has to be better than the one it replaces.

As much as I like the Honda Civic Type R and HSV Astra Turbo; I try to keep away from hatches with torsion beam rear ends. Learnt from past experiences.

Flares, scoops, big spoilers are fine if you like the attention - I like the understated Euro BMW - M Power, AMG look instead. Silk velvet over an iron cloak.

I hate what the Holden as done with the SS Commodore to appease the yanks. Same thing was done with the Magna Rallariat sent to North America. IMO stuff like that belongs on race cars, not road cars.

The term underdone refers to lack of performance; esp in the MKIV GTI. This has been rectified with the MKV. Bridging the distance from MKIV R32 performance to MKV R32 not as great - so kudos to you on that point.

Rather than putting together a suspension review - we may well have to do some back to back comparos on MKIV R32 -v- MKV R32.

Next review likely to be up against Ian @ rennenhaus.com.au R32 Koni-sport neuspeed package -v- same car with Koni-FSD; as soon as Jester_Fu gets his dough and act together. Maybe you could tag along, and who knows, you and Jester_Fu may just become friends.

Cheers
WJ

Get my act together... pfft... much easier to just talk crap on the web. There's also no way i could be friends with a Mk4 R owner - we're sworn enemies. Throw a Peugeot into the mix... wowha

I'm slowly convincing the minister of finance and testicles to allow me to get suspension done. I keep point the noises out when i exceed suspension travel on those fast off camber bumpy corners. Sometimes, i've got her hearing noises that aren't even there
