I opted for the manual simply because I like the whole shifting action and that 6spd manual box is a beauty to work too. Not to mention you save a bucket load of cash.

Seems DSG is so popular that among GTI orders that VW isn't offering DSG as an option on any other VW models until September. The GTI and R32 both have priority when it comes to DSG transmissions.

I swore I'd always drive a manual... until I tried the DSG. Subjectively, it does have a video game feel, but not crappy like an IS300. The shifts are very fast.... I can't wait till the engine is properly broken in.

Now, ask me in 6 months if this was a good choice;)

I think that here we have traditionalists and people who want to try something new...I haven't driven the gti yet, but from what I read and hear, the DSG truly is awesome. However, to traditionalists, its all about the foot work and really being involved, whereas with the DSG, its like real circuit racing. I mean it must be good, considering VW is estimating half of all people who will buy it will choose DSG. Maybe its so good that it will make some of us convert. I'm pretty damn sure we'll be able to mod DSG equipped cars since VW isn't just going to use cheap materials, expecting no one to play with the car.

For now, I'm a manual purists and I'm sticking to it, but I haven't driven A DSG GTI, so I'll have to wait and see...

I've driven only manuals since the day I started driving. I love them. Even on "boring" cars. My Miata wouldn't be a Miata without a manual. Most current auto trannies are amazing. Quick shifts, responsive downshifts, little power loss. However, they've all still been autos, even with buttons/paddles/triptonic gates, blah blah blah. There's always been that little bit of delay, a little sort mushiness between your foot and the juice. That's always been my biggest gripe.

I really am leaning towards the manual, mainly because as cool as the DSG is, you are still more involved. However, the DSG is freakin AWESOME. Acceleration does not delay, and instead of a sort of meshy mush between gears, the shifts BAM BAM, like the snap of a finger. The thrust into your seatback is non stop. Very impressive, and very cool. The other things are that the manual is a little rubbery and vague for my tastes (wasn't expecting Miata, but was hoping for a little more Acura RSX or something). But more than that, the pedal alignment just still doesn't feel right on the GTI. I feel a little too far when depressing the clutch, maybe slightly too close to the gas pedal, and WAY too close to the brake pedal. Most cars I can sorta twist my heel from gas to brake, in the GTI I have to lift my leg over to the brake pedal. And still stretching to get the clutch to the floor. I REALLY don't like that but wonder if I just need to get used to it, or get the seat positioned properly or something. That is my biggest gripe.

So, I can't yet vote. Don't really want an auto or have to pay the extra $1100 for it. Don't like the pedal distance on the manual and the DSG is very cool, very fast, and very un-auto-like.

Hi everybody! I am a novice on the forum and a BIG Gti fan tooo... and i have 3 questions for the experts in DSG: i am planning 2 buy a DSG Golf Gti (european model) and i am curious:
1)if u can put the DSG in Neutral while driving ... let's say down on a long distance slope...
2)if u can make a departure with lounch control while using the manual gear change
3)how do u go back to D (automatic drive mode) after changing gears with the paddles without stoping
? :) thanks

1.) I'm sure you could, never really tried it though
2.) Not sure
3.) You move the shifter over to 'D'

My question is... would any DSGers ever go back to a manual??

I'll have to go DSG myself. Driving in LA is rediculous, an hour and a half to drive 18 miles?! My left knee feels like it's gonna explode after 20 minutes of bumper to bumper. No more manual for me...sadly.

Oh, and I've always HATED automatics! But I guess DSG isn't exactly an automatic.

To answer euskadi71's question, yes, I have gone back to a 6 speed manual in my R32 after having had DSG in both a 3.2 TT and 3.2 A3. I found that the DSG after two years of use, took away the enjoyment of driving fast along the twisty and tight back roads in this area. It is easy to confuse the DSG and find yourself in the wrong gear at the wrong time.

Don't get me wrong the DSG is a fine piece of engineering and launch control is a manic bit of kit which is great to show off now and again, but at what cost to the gearbox?

Everyone to their own choice, for me manual is my preferred option at this time but who knows what the future will bring.

WOW! Talk about a thread ressurection. Anyways, yes there have been converters back to the manual. Didn't ya just read the thread about ScuderiaVw making that change? Anyways, if you think the traffic is too intense in LA for a manual then get a DSG. Lot's of drivers bought it for that reason alone. Some say they love it and others say they still prefer the 6spd manual but that the traffic is too crowded for one.

manual for me,....

I feel it puts me closer and more in touch with my 2007 GTI,...

A smooth shift through all six gears,....reving the engine, shifting at red-line,....braking and down shifting into a set of sweet "S" curves, accellerating and up shifting on the apexes,...Ahhhhhhhhhh,..so sweet.

Yeah,..I like the manual,..I like the control and the decision to shift when I want to.

Yep,...manual for me.

I had already ordered a 6M and later test drove a DSG... It was impressive. The only thing is I would treat it like a toy, play with it for a bit when it's new and then not touch it after a couple weeks. I'm still of the opinion I made the right choice. I know the DSG is quicker, no problem believing, it's just not my cup of tea...
