GTI "Homelink". Can it be installed in the car?

I bought a homelink install kit for my old Jetta about 5-6 years ago. I think I bought it from: http://www.mitocorp.com/ but I do not see it on their site now. Worked fine. I had it in the headliner.

For the GTI I just bought this homelink remote:

Any programable remote works for my home garage but I have a commercial gate at work that requires the homelink to learn it's code.

My garage remote fits perfectly in the too-small-for-sunglasses storage. However, in my previous cars, I just tapped a modified (always on) remote to my high beams. I just flash my high beams and the garage opens

How did you modify the remote to pull this off???

Flashing my highs sounds so much cooler than pressing any button!!!

My gate/garage door remote used a 12v battery. The way I set it up, I wired it so the remote was always on, then wired the battery leads in the remote to the highbeams, which were also on a 12v line. Of course, it was all clean and the remote was in a waterproof case (ziplock bag+electrical tape)...
