Updated results again next month. As always, the more owners participate, the better the information we can provide. More participants needed now that we're reporting on gas and diesel cars separately. At some point we'll also split the 2.5 and 2.0T--just a matter of getting enough participants.

Car reliability research

TrueDelta has updated results for the Jetta, Rabbit, and GTI based on owner experiences through December 31, 2009. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009 gas: 20

2009 diesel: 50

Haven't yet split earlier years:

2008: 44

2006.5-2007: 67

2005.5-2006 Jetta: 73

The gas 2009 is better than average, the others are about average.

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.

In the case of the Jetta, Rabbit, and GTI, the percentage with no repairs is about 44 for the 2005.5-2006, 61 for the 2006.5-2007, 71 for the 2008, and 54 for the 2009 TDI, while the percentage of lemons is about 4 for the 2009 TDI and less than one for the 2005.5-2006, 2006.5-2007, and 2008. The difference in the Lemon-odds is not significant given the sample size, but I provide these stats because many people probably expect higher percentages.

We've updated results for the Jetta, Golf, and GTI based on owner experiences through March 31, 2010. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2010 gas: 74

2010 diesel: 143, worse than average, common problem with O2 sensors

2009 gas: 26, better than average

2009 diesel: 57

2008: 41, better than average

2006.5-
2007: 69

2005.5-
2006: 88
