Diagnosing smoking engine

A couple weeks ago my engine started smoking from behind the engine(seems like it’s from behind the battery/turbo area) after I was revving it up pretty high. I was thinking it might be piston rings but I dont want to put all my money and time into replacing them and have that not be the issue. Any ideas what it could be?

Probably the rocker cover, valve cover, or oil and coolant lines to turbo. Do you have an endo-scope? Might want to consider one or find someone that will help you.

Piston rings? That would cause smoke through the exhaust. Is that what is going on, smoke from the exhaust, or is smoke coming up from the back/right side of the engine?

Here's our engine pdf. You can get oriented on page 12: http://www.volkspage.net/technik/ssp/ssp/SSP_337.pdf
