Brake Problem

GC3663

Ready to race!
Hey guys,

having some problems with my brakes...

recently went to a track day at eastern creek....came back with the brake pedal very very spongy so i took it to JaxQuikFit at atarmon and asked for the brake fluid to get flushed...

after the flush..the brake pedal is less spongy than it was...but still not at the level of firmness that it used to have....its definitely lost the initial bite that i used to get when stepping on the brakes

is this because Jax did a shoddy job with the brake fluid flush? or are has another problem appeared?

cheers guys

If the brakes weren't bled properly after the 'flush', then the pedal will still feel spongy. If they gave you the car back feeling that way and didn't say anything like "there might be another issue"... then there's a pretty good chance they just did a crappy job.

Take it to a brake specialist. Jax ain't much of anything in general.

I would take it to a specialist euro mechanic. TCCA Motorsport is one many on here swear by, and is close to you.

TCCA is a rip off!!! GC heres a quick thing you can do to see if there is possibly air in your brake line. sit in the car.. DONT TURN IT ON... just PUMP the brake pedal till it firms up... NOW HOLD your foot on the brake pedal.... IF you feel it start giving........ eg getting soft and spongey.. more than likely you got air in the lines.....

secondly after a hard thrash at the tracks... depending how hard you flogged the car and brakes...... your pads probably copped a beating and may be down.. and could be the reason you get that spongey feeling as well.

take your car to V-sport. They are the local arm of Comp Friction from Canberra which are the brake specialist.... Tony there will look after you. Tell him Rob with the Black Golf R32 sent you.. he will know who and he'll give you a good price.. he looks after my brakes after every single track day i do.. and its recommended you get your brakes serviced after track days... which usually is a good flush of the brake fluids...

Tony will also recommend small things you can do to over come your spongey brake issues which are not very costly.

they usually include

1. hi temp brake fluids
2. Braided Lines
3. Higher Friction/Heat Tolerant brake pads.

these simple mods will make the world of difference if you intend to track regularly.. just search the forum....

you will always get spongey brakes on track because your brake fluid boils... your pads build up a lot of heat and get a "coating" over the pads which increases pedal travel.. and during high temps your brake lines will actually expand and flex out... the main causes of spongey brakes and long pedal travel on track :)

good luck :)
