What does one need in order to deter car thieves who only wish to push the GTI few blocks to steal its wheels? I only ask because my girlfriend's 2013 Ford Escape was stolen in such a matter. So how does one protect the GTI?
Old school of using the club, gearshift lock?
Escape was stolen in a Detroit neighborhood. These guys unlocked the car without triggering the alarm, busted the shifting mechanism and threw the shifter into neutral. They proceeded to roll the car backwards (engine was never started) from the driveway onto the street. Once on the street, they somehow managed to turn the steering wheel to rotate the car facing the street. Then another vehicle proceeded to ram and push the Escape several blocks down where then these cats took off the rims. Car was left on its belly, left rear window busted. How the hell is it possible to turn a steering wheel of a shut off car? Gain entry without the alarm going off? To shift in into neutral.
Also, when I called Ford to find out if they can track the car through its navigation/MyFord Touch, they said they have no tracking capabilities. That is a bit odd. Anyway...we found the thing, but wheels gone, undercarriage damaged, busted window, center console and whatever other damage is yet to be discovered by the mechanics.
