I was humoring the article until I read this...

Jemma Haythorne's father David was relieved when she said she wanted to learn to drive an automatic. As the family does not own a manual, it would have been hard for Jemma to accumulate 120 hours of manual experience.

Besides, the Park Orchards 17-year-old said, she sometimes found it hard to concentrate. ''It is a lot of pressure and I was worried if I drove a manual I might crash the car,'' Jemma said.

Oh... my... god. I think they removed a few "likes" from her quote.

And no... this isn't a dig at DSG. I forgive auto drivers that have DSG!

Most defiantly not just a gen y trade!! i know numerous women ranging from the ages of 16-50 who don't drive a manual because they believe it is "too difficult"

It's not just Generation Y (unless the CEO is 20)!

"New car sales echo this trend, with automatics accounting for about 70 per cent of the new car market in Australia, despite costing about $2000 more and being less fuel efficient, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

The chamber's chief executive officer, Andrew McKellar, said while North American, European and Japanese markets were still strongly manual, Australia was bucking the trend with manual cars now deemed a niche market.

''There are some cars that will always have a market in manual, like the sports car, some larger four-wheel-drives and utility and commercial vehicles … but there is a move away from manual for all but the specialist or enthusiast driver,'' Mr McKellar said.

He said Australia's growing passion for auto cars may be attributed to the long distances travelled, relatively cheap fuel costs and the preference for company cars to be automatic."

WTF, how does travelling long distances stop you from buying a manual, surely this is the best enviroment to use a manual as you leave it in top gear and don't have to change.

And the dumbshit makes no mention of DSG style gearboxes.

Just what we need on charge of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.... someone who knows nothing about cars and probably drives a Toyota Prius :iono:

My girlfriend got an automatic Tiguan as a loaner yesterday when her 5spd MKIV went in for a recall, I swear she forgot how to drive an auto and went for the clutch pedal numerous times while stopping
