Zach, Thanks for a great answer. My own 'treasure chest' is more like a small cardboard box, so this makes good sense to me, plus readily available replacement pads in the future IS a big plus.

Couple questions:
1) The part numbers for the bolts you gave for the rear brake setup are different than whats given here: http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68458
Specifically, for the carrier->hub bolts, you give "N 910 815 01" and the diagram gives "N 910 068 02" (the same as the GTI), and for carrier->caliper you give "WHT003250" and the diagram gives "8E0 615 141" (also the same as the GTI).
Where did you get your info?
2) Do the rear GTI splash/dust shields fit with the rear R32 brakes, or do they need to be removed?
3) When you order the calipers new as described, do they come with the little rattle clips?

In ETKA, I have >

Brake caliper blue left 1k0 615 423 G
Brake caliper blue right 1k0 615 424 G
Brake carrier blue with retaining pin left 1k0 615 425 K
Brake carrier blue with retaining pin right 1k0 615 426 C

As you can see, these are all in blue color. Is there any code for if we'd want to take them unpainted ? I would like to paint them red and I think the new paint will stick better to an unpainted caliper. If not, I would probably have to use sandpaper to remove the blue paint !

Ps : Are those splash shields so necessary ? I wouldn't use them if not so important (anyway I've read around here that only 2 out of 3 holes match on the GTI !

From:http://translate.google.com/transla...=1K0+615+426+G&hl=en&rlz=1C1GGLS_enUS366US369

Parts in parenthesis are in black from the Scirocco (not sure if that helps)
1 * 5N0 615 611 E (1Q0 615 611 B) - Left Bracket
1 * 5N0 615 612 E (1Q0 615 612 B) - Right Bracket
1 * 1K0 615 425 T (1K0 615 425 R) - Brake carrier with guide pins on the left
1 * 1K0 615 426 H (1K0 615 426 G) - Brake carrier with guide pins on the right
1 * 1K0 615 423 G (8J0 615 423 E) - Caliper Left
1 * 1K0 615 424 G (8J0 615 424 E) - brake caliper right

You are right that only 2/3 of the holes fit for the rear splash shields. They arent strictly necessary, many people run without them.
