Even though dpham got it covered, I posted my gear ratio tables a long time ago but it was sort of out of context, so in case you find it helpful...

Thanks, that's great information. It's interesting that the manual and 'automatic' are so similar. In other makes, autos have more conservative ratios.

I actually already made KPH tables per a previous request. Didn't notice you were in OZ or I would've pointed you to them in the first place.

Both trannies have two final gears, one for 1st-4th, the second for 5th-6th. The 4th and 5th gear ratios are nearly identical because of the difference in the finals. The net result is the same exponential gear multiplication as a single final tranny...

Overall Gearing of the Manual--
13.2384

first post on the forums....

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I need input/advice on shift points. I've had my GTI for about three weeks now (first ever manual) and I usually shift into 6th gear by the time i'm doing 60 km/h. The rpm's seem to be around 1500rpm and the car cruises along nicely. Now, when it comes to accelerating in this scenario (using my 6th gear), the rpm's increase slowly upto 2000rpm (slow acceleration) but after 2000rpm the engine seems to increase rpm rather quicker.

My questions are :

1) Is it safe to cruise at 60km/h (40mph) in 6th gear?
2) Is it harmful to accelerate to a greater speed in 6th gear?

FWIW I have started down shifting to 5th and/or 4th gear when I need to drive faster then 60km/h.

I have other questions regarding shifting too, but perhaps I'll start a new thread.

As long as you are not bogging down there is nothing wrong with it, other than being boringy slow to accelerate.

IMO, 60 km/h in sixth isn't a good idea because of this. For safety, it's better to be in a lower gear and able to accelerate when needed.
