first post on the forums....
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I need input/advice on shift points. I've had my GTI for about three weeks now (first ever manual) and I usually shift into 6th gear by the time i'm doing 60 km/h. The rpm's seem to be around 1500rpm and the car cruises along nicely. Now, when it comes to accelerating in this scenario (using my 6th gear), the rpm's increase slowly upto 2000rpm (slow acceleration) but after 2000rpm the engine seems to increase rpm rather quicker.
My questions are :
1) Is it safe to cruise at 60km/h (40mph) in 6th gear?
2) Is it harmful to accelerate to a greater speed in 6th gear?
FWIW I have started down shifting to 5th and/or 4th gear when I need to drive faster then 60km/h.
I have other questions regarding shifting too, but perhaps I'll start a new thread.
