Not sure how useful this will be but here goes anyway. I had one hell of a time removing the ring and couldn't find anything online for it so I figure this would be helpful for those who might need it in the future.
It all comes down to having the right tool. This little pick thingy made my life so much easier.
You wanna take the pick and pick at the end of either side of the ring. If necessary, use a screw driver to hold the other side so the ring doesn't move around.
Keep picking at it and try to get the hook under the inside ring. Eventually, you'll get the hook under the ring enough to pop it out of the wheel. (You can see by all the scratches and dents on the ring that I got frustrated and tried to kill it with a hammer.)
Sometimes, the ring just wont come out even when the thinner retaining ring is holding it so you'll have to bring out the persuader. For me it's a wooden stick and a hammer. Take off the center cap, poke the stick through the center, resting it on the ring and give it a good whack.
Victory is MINE!
