I made a few splash screens with photoshop then put them on a micro SD card and just uploaded them to the head unit. It's a feature of the head unit, nothing special.

You can just use the cheaper harness, then all you'll have to do is run your own accessory power. You'll lose the RAP feature like your stock radio has (when you turn off the engine and the power stays on temporarily), but if you can live with that, then yeah go right ahead.

Which harness do you suggest if I'm putting in a nav unit, but I want to use the factory amp that came with my premium audio package?

Nice write-up.

Although, you could just buy one of the many VW specific units available out there, cheap and nasty for $300ish and higher quality units around the $600 mark, like the Audiosources units on this forum, or Dynavin etc. At the more expensive end ($1,600ish approaching $2k) even Alpine and Pioneer have VW specific CAN-Bus compatible units. With all of these just remove original unit, plug in new unit, replace trim, done.

Speaking for my own Audiosources ANS-810, it has 8" screen, proper line-level outs, video out for rear LCDs, video in, aux audio in, reverse camera in etc, plus Full (or nearly) CAN-Bus functions like MFD display and door open status, OPS parking display etc + full steering wheel controls. Other brands may do similar things. So many VW specific options, I would never consider generic Alpine / Pioneer units. Just saying

Great write up and thanks for the business. Shoot me a PM and I'll send you a kit on me.

Here's a break down of the kits. Just sponsored the forum today so I'll have my own guide soon with videos.

We have 2 shades black and matte. Black matches the single CD and matte matches the nav and 6 CD radios.

RMK1/2 Regular single din kit

RMK3/4 Premium Single Din Kits. The faceplate of the kit is also the trim piece for the radio. So no seams like your molded one.

RMK5/6 Regular double din kit with a trim. Adjustable depth.

RMK7/8 Premium Double Din Kits. The faceplate of the kit is also the trim piece for the radio. So no seams like your molded one.

Sorry for bringing up an old posting, but has anyone tried tapping on on the key sense line at the steering column ? I want to have my aftermarket radio on with the key in the ignition, right now the crappy canbus unit I have doesn't keep the 'accessory' line it uses active unless it detects a door open or a window open / canbus activity. so I want to bypass the canbus for that and hook the accessory line of my radio directly to the key sense line at the harness as mentioned in this posting...m
