dtft brought up a good point about writing off losses too. If the IRS wants to pursue income tax on secondary sales of consumer goods, I think they're opening the door to depreciation of consumer goods too. My bet is that this is all an unenforceable scare tactic and they'll likely change the threshold in 2 years when they realized they aren't equipped to process the amount of information they've just mandated they receive.
