I bought my GTI ('05, 85000km, UG, DSG, leather, ABT-remap, almost all options) in semptember 2010 at a VW-Dealer (The Netherlands).
Because I'm familiar with VCDS (owned a TT mk1 quattro), I started scanning for faultcodes and found that the flapper motor failed and auto rain sensor didn't work properly.
So took it to the dealer again and they replaced all necessary parts.
To make a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry long story short:

After I picked it up again, other faultcodes showed up and I had problems like a squeak in front suspension, engine sounded like a diesel when idle, non-working 3rd brake light, defective evap system, etc, etc.
I went back to the dealer 4 times and it stayed there for around 20 days in total.
They replaced sóóó much parts (like both complete front lower arms, all bushes, chain and chain tensioner, flapper motor, wiper stalk, rain sensor, n80 valve, evap system, evap canister, rear spoiler, rear brake light, cash money back for defective rcd300, etc, etc)

Total costs under VW Warranty: € 3530,66 / $ 4856,95 !!!
I also sent a registered letter to VW, telling them about all problems, I have pointed them to all specific laws, concerning consumer protection, etc.
VW answered that if I get another problem with this car (within the 1 year warranty period), I can bring it back and get my cash back!

All parts they replaced:
- 06F121132H > connection
- 06F133482 > Flapper motor
- 1K0955559AH > Rain sensor
- ZG 3399150 > cooling liquid
- RCD300 radio > €400,- cash back (because model discontinued)
- 06D109229B > Camshaft timing chain
- 06D109281D > Cam bolt
- 06E906517A > N80 Purge Valve
- 06F109217A > Chain tensioner
- 06F133781L > Hose
- 06F198088D > Repsatz(?)
- 1K0201797AE > Evap Canister
- 1K0407151BC > Left lower control arm
- 1K0407152BC > Right lower control arm
- 1K0953519J > Wiper switch
- 1K6827933D > GTI spoiler
- 1K6945097F > 3rd brake light

(Not mentioned all the hours labour, paint shop and small parts!)

Car is finally 100%!
No faultcodes, car runs smoothly, idles quietly, and drives/corners very good because all bushes and control arms are replaced. It really feels like new!

So glad I bought this GTI second-hand at a VW-dealer with 1 year VW warranty.
Did I already mentioned VW paid $ 4856,95 for all this??!!??

Also VCDS/Cable is the best investment you can do!!! (maybe if I didn't scan it for faultcodes, I wouldn't ever notice all the defective parts)

Wow i'd find something in less than a year because long term the problems will only get worse. I wish VWoA was like this instead of there don't give a shiit policy.

Most problems where so minor, that other people whouldn't ever notice.

- Like the 'idling sound': It was there but if I never compared the sound with open bonnets, compared to another 2.0tfsi from a friend, I wouldn't ever know (it was just a litttttle louder).
- The squeak/rattle in the front suspension: I only heard it when it was below zero degrees outside and only once or twice per trip.
- The faultcode concerning the flapper motor: If I hadn't scanned it with vcds, I wouldn't notice it at all. You couldn't really feel it while driving.

So only problems you would really notice where the 3rd brakelight and defecte internal cd-player...

Other persons would just drive this car and think it is a great car!
Happy I am a little more precise and technical and consulted vcds.

I still have 8months warranty left, so if another problem occurs, I still have warranty and I can get my money back.
And hey: Al the parts are brand-new, so better than every other second-hand GTI!
Maybe I am going to try to 'extend' the warrany for free, so another full year, starting from this date.

So was the "loud idling" contributed by needing the timing belt/tensioner replaced?

Correct!
First we all thought it was due to the sound from the fuel injectors, because they are quite loud in all 2.0tfsi's, but when I compared it with a friends gti, we noticed that my engine was louder and a little 'wobbly' when idle.
Especially the bad tensioner caused this.
They replaced all related parts and solved it.
But if I hadn't compared it, we all would think it was 'normal' idling behaviour.

I spoke to my VW dealer again and wrote another letter where I asked for 'leniency'.
My 1 year VW full warranty was from the day of purchase (30 october 2010) to 30 october 2011.

Because I had so much 'misery' with the car, they EXTENDED THE WARRANTY WITH 6 EXTRA MONTHS!!! I now have warranty until May 2012!

I love the customer service from VW The Netherlands (Auto Muntstad, de Meern, The Netherlands)
