DASH DIFFUSER RATTLING! MIGHT NOT JUST BE A SIMPLE FIX

so the other day i had some time in my hands. I decided to try to fix the dash air diffuser rattling. Everyone seems to think something is loose and can simply fix it by sticking something there. From my investigating, yes theres something loose but its not what everyone thinks, at least on my gti 08'. The problem i found wasnt the typical fixable area, it was in the lower area diffuser flap, when you switch the way the air flows, you will see the flap move. That the flap and you will create the same rattle sound and there is your answer to whats rattling. I've tried to put tape there to absorb the sound and stuff, I've tried double sided tape that wont stick, regular tape that wont work. Then i realized the hinges that holds it in place isnt tight enough, allowing room for it to move therefore making that sound. I dont know if the dealer will be able to fix this but will bring it to their attention next week when i have break. Well if anyone else finds out more information about it please chip in. THANKS

I have the same problem and its real annoying especially driving 45mins one way to work. The OEM dash tray, do you mean insert one in there eliminating the diffuser?

This is a repair covered under warranty. It took the dealer 3 times but they fixed it with a new part and some noise dampening insulation

mine started doing this same thing about a year and a half after I got the car and they said that rattles and stuff were only covered for one year. :(

cant do that if you have the navi though. or actually the dual climate control. There is another temp sensor there.

is it a rattle or a clicking? clicking from servo motors on the ac system is not infrequent on the new cars, jettas passats gtis all of em. Perhaps talk with the dealer about a clicking from the center dash thats ac related. Worth a shot.

i did all the dash rattle DIY's i could find and although they did get rid of a few of the rattles i was still unhappy with with the job. the whole center dash vent thing creaked like an old ladies knees and it was driving me insane. I ended up completely taking out the center vents (first disconnecting the battery to avoid any airbag problems) and bought some plastic epoxy and ran a bead of glue all around the back of the flappy cover to the actual vent housing. Long story short Im finally pleased. Zero noise. and I'm picky. Although now the other rattles are more noticable :thumbdown:

@ MACH GTI - i just borrowed your pic and did a little modification.

i have the same rattle before but it i tried to put 3M double sided tape in between the metal and the foam board.. its right under the red circle
after that the rattle is gone
