Dont really need raw to do it but it helps.

Too true. I did several that all sucked or looked no different than I could do with levels in Photoshop, so i moved on.

Yeah, RAW is my saviour in most cases 'cos I almost never get a shot correct right out of the camera. This case was no exception since I was going through my old pics that I didn't use Exposure Bracketing on so I had to force the bracketing from a single image. Possible with a JPG, but so much better from RAW.
