The country where the vehicle was manufactured is represented by the first number on the VIN.

3 = Mexico
W = Germany
1 = USA

My '01 Jetta was built in Mexico. When I traded it in for the GTI, it had 208,000 mile on it. Mexican VWs =/= automatic time in the shop.

Tell your friend he needs an edumacation.

The 11th number indicates the production plant, not the nation of origin. If the FIRST digit was "W", then it would mean Germany...

i would think that mexican vws might actually be better seeing the way that most of those guys work on the job site (not necessarily mexicans central and south americans in general)

Yes the first number is where it's manufactured but the 11th gives you tha plant of asembly. There are cars that are manufactered in Germany and asembled elsewhere. That's why you have to look at 11th.
