MFSW airbag modification

Ready to race!
Does anyone know if i would be able to re-use the airbag from my existing non-multi function steering wheel if i replaced it with a multi-function steering wheel on?

Would i need any other parts like a wiring harness or control module?

Thanks:thumbsup:

mate do a search on MKV some guy used a wheel from a mk6 on his mk5, you would think that it would be the same

Well, i've managed to get a MFSW for £75 second hand which i think is'nt a bad deal.:D

I'm guessing i will need to add a module and harness but cant find any info on the web, any ideas?:)

hey dstill, I think there is a thread on here floating around regarding the MFSW. IIRC, it's just plug and play.

Hi,

I cannot answer the original question with 100% certainty (based on personal experience) since my Mk6 came with MFSW. I can say that I've answered emails worldwide from Mk5 to Mk6 retrofits and nobody has mentioned any actual Airbag replacements. ( they look identical IMO too )

Generally speaking, the address 16 - Steering Wheel Module that was installed in a car without MFSW would not support the coding or needed internal hardware. This page should help clarify the various modules:

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions

If you have a complete Auto-Scan to post from VCDS, please do so before removing any components. This will help determine what module(s) are currently installed and where the G86 (steering angle sensor) is actually mounted. (The linked list and the LIN versions will make more sense at that point also)

-Dana

P.S. If the MFSW for £75 is from a Mk6 (12 button, LIN 2.0) with the module and switches all installed...you did real good on that price

Hi Dana, this is excellent information, only thing is its way above my technical comprehension.

1. I'm ok with the airbag query, i've found out they are teh same part numbers so thats one thing sorted.

2. I'm confused what Address 16 is. As my car came with no MFSW i'm assuming i will have no module and will have to isntall a MFSW module. Will i also need to change the CECM, i think this is the Central Electronics Control Module but i stand to be corrected?

3. How do i get a VCDS autoscan, is this done by someone with the Vagcom cables and software?

4. Again, please excuse my ignorance but what does the steering wheel angel sensor affect?

As you can see i'm not up to speed with this mod which is very frustrating but thanks for the information you have already kindly given.:thumbsup:

Hi Dana, had my local mechanic scan my car on your advice (greatly appreciated) and the module that is fited is 1K0953549CQ. Would you know if this will supprot adding a MFSW to my car?

Hi!

I have to correct a previous typo "G85" is the steering angle sensor, not G86 (but pretty close on the keyboard).

That module 1K0-953-549-CQ will not support MFSW. Check the detail here:
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions

To clarify that list, look in the "Steering Angle Sensor" column and you'll see "No" next to your module. The car has one, but it must be mounted inside the steering rack, not the at the steering column / steering wheel control module.

The US cars changed over at some point in 2009, all of the 2010 Golf/Jetta cars have the sensor in the rack to the best of my knowledge.

Next, on the clarification topic "LIN Version" is the communication speed that the MFSW (the module inside the wheel or "slave") and the main address 16-Steering wheel module communicate.

My general summary is:

* Cars with the older Mk5 wheel and 8 buttons use the LIN 1.3 system.
* Cars with the newer Mk6 wheel and 12 button wheel use the LIN 2.0 system.
* Cars without MFSW don't have a LIN version since they don't have the capability to talk to a slave module (like yours).

---

Before making any recommendations on which one you should purchase, I'd want to see a complete Auto-Scan from the car. I will say the CD module is pretty common from the factory.

See if this makes sense, my 2010 Gti with factory MFSW and paddle shifters:

Address 16: Steering wheel Labels: 1K0-953-549-MY9.lbl
Part No SW: 1K0 953 549 CD HW: 1K0 953 549 CD
Component: J0527 055 0111
Coding: 0001632
Shop #: WSC 01357 011 00200

Part No: 5K0 959 542 <-- This is the MFSW or Slave Module, LIN 2.0
Component: E221__MFL-TAS H05 0010
Coding: 00000131
Shop #: WSC 00000

Bringing up that old thread =) ... I wanted to ask that does anyone know that would 1K0-953-549-CE module work? I am going to get a MFSW, but my car also has 1K0-953-549-CQ module, so I need a new one. Everything seems to be same with those modules, except LIN Version, so I am assuming that it will work.

Just trying to make sure, that I order things that will work in that car.

Dana, i've got my steering wheel and also understand i need a new wiring harness. I will also need to change the steering wheel module, could you tell me which part number this will be.

I am looking to upgrade my midline MFD to a highline in the near future, will this affect which steering wheel module i need to go for?

I'm still confused over this steering wheel angle sensor issue, will i have to change this as well or just make sure i purchase the correct steering wheel module to make sure they are compatible?

Thanks in advance as i know i'm asking a lot here but it is really appreciated.:)

So if I purchase a MFSW without an airbag, I can use my airbag from my previous steering wheel?

My 2.5L Golf started with a non-MFSW:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_TP9A_TQ7hvU/TOIGSeFl8tI/AAAAAAAAATs/DrfNFsyW6tI/s640/DSCN0606.JPG

The airbag can be reused in a MFSW. I upgraded to a GTD wheel with paddles. My SWCM was "CP" version and I upgraded to a "CD" version in order to get the buttons and paddle working via vagcom. Steps and some links to DIY:

# http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a...wheel-swap.htm
# SWCM upgrade (part # 1K0-953-549-CD) from eBay
# I got the MFSW from a salvage shop in the UK via eBay (came w/o airbag)
# The stock Golf airbag fits the GTI-style flat bottom wheel perfectly
# I also needed a new wiring harness since the original wheel wasn't a MF (part # 5K0-971-584-A)
# Vag COM and everything integrated perfectly with Tiptronics, RCD510 and 9w7
# My MFD was already the highline version and I have the wiper stalk with the MFD controls

New wheel:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_TP9A_TQ7hvU/TO1Y36F-F6I/AAAAAAAAAVA/BhdvasxPKNM/s640/IMG_2237.JPG

Pic of the SWCM in the steering column:

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_TP9A_TQ7hvU/TOIGX7csukI/AAAAAAAAAT8/baTz-JUu-Uw/s640/DSCN0610.JPG

After you install the new SWCM, you will need to recalibrate the angle sensor. You can follow the procedure from the Ross Tech site:

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/steeringangle.html

Hope this helps. I would have been happy with just the wheel upgrade w/o the buttons but it turned out that I got a great deal on the salvage wheel so I spent a little more money to get the SWCM and wiring harness.

6luv, is the part number for the harness (part # 5K0-971-584-A) you have mentioned for a MFSW. I checked with my local dealer and they have siad this part number is for a standard wheel without multi-function facilities.

Very glad to hear that you have already done this. I probably will still go with a Non-MFSW since I have the same highline version with wiper stalk MFD controls. Question about your bluetooth...did you already have that installed when you got your car or did you add that later?
