Infotainment Hardware and Software Updates

My dealer (in Canada) called me a few weeks ago to advise that there was a software update available for my 2024 Golf GTI, which was delivered new with software 1939 in the Information Electronics (5F) controller. I brought the car in last week, and when I picked it up it had software version 1969 in that controller.

I'm not sure what difference the software update makes - the only difference I have seen so far is that when you shut the car off you see a reminder on the central screen to check to make sure there is no-one left behind (for example, an infant) in the back seat.

So, 1969 is definitely out there. Whether it can be implemented by over the air update or requires a dealer visit I do not know. VW of Canada is not too good at supporting over the air updates of anything.

Just wanted to ask where in Canada are you located and which dealer had the 1969 update?

I am in Toronto and have a 2022 Golf GTI with version 1880. That version has some problems where it reboots by itself and doesnt save sound EQ settings everytime turning the car off. My dealer keeps telling my they have no update even though I tell them of the issues and there is a TSB out that mentions to be update if having issues.

I have had randomly muting since I bought my car at 6/21, Infotainment update will not help for amp bug.
My amp updated at year ago.
It's actually been fine ever since but when i looked it had changed things like the sound focus from where i'd had it set.

Hi All - is this the latest hardware version? (The MIB 3 Unit) Thank you. In my Mk8 I have 5H0 035 816K HW56 - was this superceded by 5H0 035 820?

5H0035820P

These come with SW 1940 and are HW version 61.

It looks like

5H0035820S exists too.

I'm trying to find out what the latest HW version is really - not seen greater than 61 from the photos on this thread, some of those from brand new cars at the time.

No the 816K is not superseded as any other of the infotainment units.
When a replacement is done by VW they will order and install the same part number.
So if you have 816K with software 1941 they will replace it with another 816K with software 1898. Then the workshop decides if it wants to update it to the latest software available.
If you still have the old 816B with 16xx software the replacement will still be the 816B.

The 816x are for the Discovery Pro while the 820x for the Discovery Media/Ready to Discover.

The 816P/816Q/820P/820Q come with the 1940 software and appeared with the My24 Golf 8 (16.06.23 to 15.01.24)
And the Hardware number 61 has appeared with the P/R models.

The same P/R models with later build can also come with the SW 1969 and HW 67:

From 16.01.2024 the newer 816R/816S/820R/820S are installed and come with the 1969 software and HW 67

So I’ve got a used MK8 Golf 2021 and I’m going insane. The infotainment system won’t let me register a user and is on out of date firmware.

Following information important:

- Green light above SOS button
- Apple play works
- did factory reset
- attempting to register a user using the car causes a spinning circle and a freeze
- I keep getting a “digital manual installation” notification telling me not to switch off ignition, but it always randomly fails
- I went into privacy settings and it says please wait for a while and then says they’re currently unavailable

I went into the engineering mode and it said MOI3_EU_VW_R8960L software version 1896.

In system info it says:
Device part number: 5H0035820H
Hardware: H56
Software: 1896
Display unit control panel hardware: H46
“” software: 2092
Navigation database: 20.3
Media codec: 3.1.4
Radio database: 1.30.30

At the dealer, they initially seemed to think I was stupid and said someone could definitely show me how to login so we could do an update. That failed and they have said there’s no way they can do a manual update due to everything being over the air, and that they need to now phone Volkswagen to find out what to do.

I want to try updating the firmware to see if this will help with the issues I’m experiencing. How do I find out which firmware/version I need and where do I get the right file from? I’ve already discovered the USB menu in the engineering settings which makes me feel like they were either lying or incompetent about there being no manual way to install updates. I don’t want to brick my car or anything though so any advice about how to get the right file and do this safely much appreciated! (And if you can think of any reason why any of the above might be happening, please do let me know as they were very shruggy in the dealer)
