Help needed with Ipod Touch

Just got an ipod touch from a friend, I think it must be the 2g? Anyway the current software on it is 2.2 and I need 3.1.2 for like every app, but it's $5 to download, anyone know how I can get it free?

they always charged for the iPod touch update in major update versions...but yea, there are ways around that!
