Cabin Air Filter - When to Change?

About that simple.

Maintenance book says something along the lines of 20k miles for Jetta City and some other car, but does not mention Golf or GTI.

Shows 40k all models this should be replaced.

40k miles seems long to me. But if it isn't necessary, then why replace. Also would seem odd that a few VWs require it every 20k but then the GTI every 40k?

EDIT: While I'm at it, what about the engine air filter as well?

For the in cabin, replace it when it starts to smell bad when you turn the air on.

You can change it as often as you want. I change mine every 20-30K miles. I think the part is 15 dollars. The change takes 5 minutes and is very easy. Under the passenger dash.

Where do you get a charcoal filter?

I laughed in the tech's face last oil change when he wanted to charge me $50 dollars for OEM filter :bellyroll:.
