82' Kawasaki KZ750 brat/cafe build

So I was an avid member of these forums for quite a while and while I still peruse I'm really not into the car scene like I used to be. This is what been holding my interest these days... an 82 Kawasaki KZ750 LTD.

I bought the bike looking like this for $540 from a friend of a friend who had neglected it for years.

The original goal was to make it a good runner, make it a little cooler and ride it. I derusted and painted the 4-1 MAC header, chopped down the seat, installed superbike handlebars, did a ton of cleaning, powdercoated the headlight bucket, exhaust hanger bracket and miscellaneous other bits and stripped the tank which got me here...still pretty ugly but miles better than what it was.

Decided I couldn't live with it as is and started to chop more. New seat pan, removed side covers, relocated some wiring added a rear frame loop, added pods and a dynojet jet kit.

So messy.

Camping mat for a seat.

Hated the "raw" look. I usually like it but it was too dirty and rusty in this case. Painted the tank with Vintage Gold Plasitidip, added UNI pods instead of cheap EMGO units.

*'82* the apostrophe goes before the 82. Just for future reference man

I'd love to have an old bike like this. My buddy was trying to sell his old bike to me for like $500 but I was broke at the time

Then this past winter I decided to really tear into it. I couldn't stand the rust and faded frame paint. The engine was clean but tarnished.

Refinished the wheels

Redid the header/exhaust, painted the swing arm

Rebuilt the forks, Progressive brand fork springs and paint.

Painted the engine and triple tree.

Reassembly begins. New Progressive rear shocks mounted and battery tray cleaned up big time. Don't mind that rusty screw, it's gone now.

Here's how it sits now after a lot of hrs.

What I did to it:

Superbike Bars
Rebuilt forks with new Progressive fork springs, lowered internally 2-3"
Progressive Rear Shocks
Front Master Cylinder from a 96 ZX7
Ballistics 8cell Lithium Ion Battery
UNI Pod filter / Crank case Breather
Shinko 712 Front and Rear tire
RK 530 Chain, New Front and Rear Sprocket
Dyna Solid Core Spark Plug Wires/ New plugs
Dynojet Stage 3 Jet Kit
Detab/Smooth the frame, fresh paint on everything.
Cleaned or Replaced wheel bearings
Smaller blinkers from Dime City Cycles

Still to come:

Seat is at the upholsterers (gf's aunt lol)
MOSFET Regulator/Rectifier from a 2008 CBR600RR
Black Exhaust Wrap

So much more work than you even know but it might be my winter project this year. Inverted forks look so dope.

Not really; Fix up the electronics, get brake mines set in, find/make conversion parts, bolt it up. You may have mismatched wheels for a bit but thats a minor issue.

conversion parts if you want to use a gsxr front end: http://cognitomoto.com/collections/g...nversion-parts

allballsracing sells bearing kits as well. Most of cognitos stuff is for Honda CBs as that's their bike of choice.

I care about the mismatched wheels which is what makes it more work. I would have to make a new axle, figure out how to mount the new caliper, weld new fork stops onto my frame, etc. It's doable just a lot of trial and error work.

Nice work, man. Can't wait to see it with a proper seat... can't be too comfortable as it is?

Haha I actually like the look of the seat. Wouldn't mind seeing a proper seat on it to compare. But I love it.

Good job man!
