ABS/Traction Control Issue

contacted VWoA. They offered to pay 50% only. Asked for more, they said no. 50 is best they would do. Dealer wants $2100 they say its the module, but want to replace module AND pump.....weird?? I talked to dealer and told them lets ONLY do module first. That's $1200 so out of pocket it will be $600. Think I'm gonna go that route and see what happens.

That's pretty good news for you, congrats! I don't know how a few of you other guys have been able to convince VW to pay for your repairs. I called VWoA and followed with a lengthy, descriptive letter. Their response was a regretful 'no' both times. I was, however, reassured that I would be notified if a recall came about...yay.

I am now about to lay out nearly $2000 for this replacement on such a young car. So now I have a few choices. I can leave the car alone, and hope I don't have an accident caused by ABS issues, and also pretend I didn't know about the problems if/when I sell the car. Or, I can try to fight VW on this. I am thinking about filing a complaint with NHTSA, which can be done right on their site. I wondered if any of you guys living in the states have done or would consider doing the same. Obviously if your cost has been covered, you'll have no interest in this, but I'm hoping there are enough owners whose costs haven't been covered.

You guys think there's any hope here? Or is there any hope in the hard reset thing?

Thanks.

You should file a complaint. Someone can be killed with this issue. Imagine you are entering a slippery ramp and it triggers this problem. Basically all traction control systems and abs are off at this point and there is a chance that you might loose control of the car and crash.

I've been triggering my ABS whenever I can just to see if those lights would return, they have not.

I was surprised when VW customer relations actually called me to offer help. In my letter to them, I explained how serious this issue can be and will be filing a safety concern with Transportation Canada.

Thanks. What I did is write an email in that 2000 character limit box, telling them how I've been a loyal VW owner for 7 years and have owned 3 myself and "referred" others to the brand, yada yada. Asked for a phone call back, not email. I've always found its a lot harder to tell someone NO over the phone rather than an email. Talked to some lady and was very nice to her. Then some guy called and told me to bring it to the dealer to have it checked. They talked to dealer and offered to cover 50%.

Be a squeaky wheel. Good luck. Do you have any friends that are handy mechanically and have vag com? It is possible to do as a DIY. But more on the advanced side and needs vag com to be done. Also ask the dealer. My dealer originally wanted to replace module AND pump which is $1600 in parts they said. Module only is a lot less.

just an update. car was fixed. only the module was replaced (they originally wanted to replace pump too). its been 1 week now and no error codes. $680ish after VW's 50% contribution.

I am now having this same code and issue..I just contacted VWoA today via email. Hope they would cover at least 50%... Heres the code I got after driving on the canyon. I get this code only on the canyons for some reason..

i've had intermittent ABS failures but I think now it's finally bit the dust :( It started Saturday night and now each time I turn on the car the ABS lights freak out and it will not turn off. list of codes is like 3 posts long. not looking forward to this epic bill.

Shit man, did you try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes? It helped me after it started beeping and flashing each time I start the car.

It's about $600 if you've got the tools to DIY. My ABS light came on again today and went out after a restart. Twice in 2 weeks maybe.

Can you write a DIY with a few photos if you decide to swap it yourself? And do you have to copy the programming from the old module and transfer it to the new abs module? Doable with vag-com?

So VWoA denied my claim to help pay for the ABS module..

"I’m sorry to learn of your GTI’s ABS concerns; this is not the type of experience we envision for our customers.

Please know we review every case on an individual basis, as we try to help our customers whenever possible. A significant factor in our ability to do so is a vehicle’s relationship to its warranty parameters.

Because your GTI has exceeded the terms of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty which covered these concerns by more than 24 months, I regret we are unable to assist you with these repairs. I understand this does not meet your expectations, and I am sorry for the frustration and inconvenience this has caused.

Should you have your repairs completed at a Volkswagen dealership and would like us to follow up, please let us know the date and location of your appointment in advance. We can then reach out to the service department while your GTI is there to ensure the repairs are completed to your satisfaction.

You can do so by reply email, by phone at 800-822-8987, or by chatting live with us on www.vw.com. If you have any other questions in the future, please feel free to email us again."
