Suddenly won't start!

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum as I have never had the need to ask a question about my Golf until now!

I've got a 2008 GT Sport 140 with a BKD engine code. I've owned the car from 11 months old, it's the best car I've every had so it's about time it has some tlc off me.

So the problem has popped up after 8 years and 92k miles. It started to judder as if in a too high a gear and it was labouring, I dropped it a gear and pushed on and the judder went away, this all happened at between 30-40mph. As I came to a halt, it cut out and wouldn't start again.

It turns over strong, there's no dash warning lights and when I finally called the AA, the Bosch and other generic OBD didn't detect any fault codes so it got towed home.

I haven't got around to scanning it myself. I have VAGCOM as I own a 6N2 Polo GTI. I'm no stranger to VW or generally working on cars as I've just changed the gearbox on my Polo - this is all I need next! - but I don't know a lot about diesels.

Any advice on where to look first would be much appreciated, I've read a little about the low pressure or 'lifter' pump in the fuel tank? It's always been serviced by a VW specialist so I've ruled out a blocked filter etc.

Cheers

Stan

So update, I had very little fuel in the filter and with the lid off, nothing was pumping in with the ignition on. I got the back seat up and removed the pump and again, with the ignition on, a tiny noise and not much else so I've bought a new one and it still doesn't work, gutted.

Any ideas?

Hey man, I've got the exact same car.. Have you heard about the sticky veins issue? It's a common fault with these cars and the turbos.. It all gets carboned up and the turbo actuator gets stuck.. Mines stuck on full boost and constantly goes into limp mode, I think yours is the opposite and this will cause the issues you're talking about..

I have heard about the turbo as a work pal has a Passat with that very issue. The thing is, he gets a code on vagcom telling him the boost is playing up.

Mine was working fine too whereas the Passat was playing up for a while. Are you saying the turbo has closed the vanes? That'd cause some big back pressure wouldn't it?

Cheers.

Update for anyone else who suffers this. It was the lift pump, I'd primed the low pressure side of things but the engine needed cranking longer to get fuel to the injectors.

I kept stopping as the trip computer puts a big 'STOP' message on the screen after about 6-7 seconds warning you of low oil pressure!
