oil light.... losing oil

OK I'm new to this whole forum thing... Today on my way to work oil light came one and was blinking and making a beeping noise.. On my break took it for a oil change started to tick a lil and they said looks like the oil sending unit is bad as soon as you start it it starts spreading oil out... Parked it before anymore damage was done going to have it looked at this week sometime... Any advise or idea what could have happened... Temp outside was -7 degrees F
Also it's a 1998 golf gti vr6

Yikes, I hope you checked your oil level before taking it for an oil change during your break.
