P3081 - Engine Temperature Too Low

So for the past couple weeks my temperature gauge on the cluster has been acting...strange. The gauge will go up with engine temperature, but during this process and while the car is at operating temperature it will fall as if it lost the signal and then come back up...maybe fall again for a shorter period of time, etc. There are times where it never even reads the temperature at all. The fans on the front of the car are running full blast when that happens.

Using VAG-COM, I was able to find some codes under the Engine module and Instrument module. If I clear the code on the engine, the gauge gets the reading and sits at operating temp (190). Eventually the same stuff I posted above happens again. Today on my way home it actually threw a CEL and it gave me the P3081 code. This is the same code that has showed up in the Engine module when viewing through VAG-COM, but it didn't actually trigger a CEL. Clearing it again today allowed the gauge to get its reading, but the same thing happened again. I also noticed a small blip in throttle response when driving after being in the car for about 5 minutes. I noticed that when this happened, the temperature gauge started to respond again. It's weird, but I think the thermostat or temperature sensor (where ever that is) needs to be replaced.

Here's everything I got out of the car this evening:

It looks like the last two codes reference the one causing the CEL, but I threw them in there anyway.

I had this happen on an A4 it turned out to be the temp sensor.

Just got the car back from the dealership this afternoon. Thermostat and ECT both replaced under warranty with less than 700 miles until the end of my powertrain warranty :D

Hopefully nothing else goes wrong ;) (yea, right!)
