5 dollar camera mount - reviews

So I have a couple of the small sized Panasonic and Nikon cams that you buy for snapshots, getting old but still work. I am taking the GTI to its first track event and just wanted an inexpensive way to mount the cam. So 4.95 for the mini ball mount, and the rest was sitting around the garage (piece of wood and a 1/4 x 1.5in screw. It took about 5 min to make, looks like it too.

I will shoot some videos tomorrow and see how it does.... I am sure I will get my moneys worth.. all 5 dollars of it.

Drill 3 holes in a piece of wood, doesn't get much easier than that... And of course cut it to size (16in)

In for results. Just got a go pro and was trying to think of ways to mount it in the same location you did without spending a lot of money. I wonder how the wood will handle the vibrations. If the videos come out good, I may have to do this myself.

Also, would look good painted black, or stain it, just to make it more visually appealing.

Great job. I've seen some other DIY's floating around on other forums for something similar, but they spanned to both headrests. Not sure if that helps with stability and vibration or not. I've also seen some camera mounts that use a firm rubber to dampen vibration as well.

In for results!

I will shoot my trip in to work (all 8 min of it), and post this morning. Going to use the Panasonic ZS9 which is one of my junk drawer discards. I also have a Nikon V1 to try.

A coat of paint would help.

Here's a video of a drag race filmed with my camera mount. It the same design as yours except I made it out of hollow aluminum square stock attached to BOTH headrests. I also used a ratchet strap between the bar and the rear carseat tie down points to further stabilize it.

Video taken with my Canon G16 camera.

Nice! Below is some test footage from this morning. Now I remeber why the Panasonic was put in the junk drawer. Big black spot in pic also forgot to shut off autofocus so not clear, it keeps trying to focus between interior of car and outstide but I think I got at least 5 dollars worth. I am going to round the ends and paint it up. And thanks for the idea of the strap to stabalize, got one sitting in a bucket doing nothing. Who is that old fart in my mirror?

I will switch to the Nikon 1 tomorrow, incorporate the strap and see what we come up with.

This is the old Panasonic ZS9 in poor condition low res.

Nice job on the video. It really isn't as bumpy as I thought it would be to be honest. I may have to make one of these for myself. Definitely interested in seeing if the straps help.

New footage with different camera

Here is some new footage - no straps just a different camera. I think that it is a 5 dollar success. I would highly recommend it. The holes were drlled out slightly larger than the tubes for the headrest and the headrest tubes were wrapped in electrical tape so it would fit snugly.

Looks a little better if you watch it in HD

Video came out great. With that I am definitely going to make one. I saw on mcmaster carr they sell rubber inserts that could act as a bushing around the headrest tubes. I might give that a shot.

Thanks for the idea!

Track day footage

Trackday footage a little clip from todays outing 11/9 at California Speedway "Roval". I think the camera mount worked fine. This is 720p, forgot to set wind noise filter so listen low volume.

I think the camera mount was a complete success.
