MKV 2.0 GT TDI EGR Problem?

Hello all!
I would like some advice please..

I'll start from the beginning :paddle:

So for the past 3 years my 2.0 TDI ('06 and 120k miles) has intermittently gone into limp mode, normally on long stretches of motorway inclines in 6th gear 2.5-3.0k RPM.

It will come out of limp mode if I turn the ignition off and on - sometimes will stay off for a while but more often than not, it will come back within 30 seconds.

Sometimes it doesn't go into limp mode for months..

For the above - I have taken it to 2 VW dealers and a VW specialist for diagnosis but there are no codes so they haven't done anything and each time this has cost me a diagnosis fee! I've even taken it there when the problem is on and they were unable to help me! :mad0259:

Sooo... I thought i'd live with it... but now i'm bored of it again as it's happening more and more.

So more recently, I have the engine fault light on permanently and the emissions warning on permanently. Again, it goes into limp mode on motorway prolonged inclines like it did before.

I'm thinking it might be the EGR? I am not too mechanically minded, but i've done a bit of research and this is what i'm guessing?

I don't mind replacing it, maybe even myself but they're quite expensive and don't want to replace it if it's not the issue..

Also online, I see reputable EGRs for about £200-£250, but also some for £60, are these likely to be half the unit only? I think the cost for a mechanic to replace it would be about £350, but if these OEM EGRs are actually £60 then i'd prefer to do it myself, or at least have a go.

Any advice or suggestions would be highly appreciated..

Thanks,

Matt

Update: I removed the throttle body and EGR and have them a clean. I've cleared the codes, i'll see if they come back this time
