No new updates other than I managed to get 358 miles from a tank the other day. Very impressive. Car still has all kinds of problems that I haven't gotten around to fixing yet.

Carson rigged up some wiring on the speed sensor that was broken and the christmas tree is gone. Car drives well again after not having power steering assist or abs all year.

Not much to update. The car got hit on the right fender/door/mirror. Looks like complete shit. Exhaust is still fucked, sounds like a freight train. On the plus side, I was able to fit an engine hoist in the back of it yesterday without much hassle.

Just popped in to say I've enjoyed reading this thread. For all the previous owner's neglect, I'm glad to see it's running well. I've got 118k on my '08 now, and I'm planning to stick with the Rabbit for a few more years until I can afford something really nice. My headliner is falling apart, so that's 1st on my to-do list, but I may have to try my hand at installing some of mount the upgrades you did.

Thanks again for sharing everything here!

Heh no problem. My headliner is sagging too around the trim. It's such a pain to replace I will probably leave that one alone. I am looking to pick up a cheap fender and door skin and have my buddy paint them black to match it. Hopefully it's not such an eyesore after that. Mechanically it's doing ok.

I've been hanging in Florida visiting my sister and her Rabbit is in less than pristine condition, including a headline that has almost entirely separated. I really want to replace it but she just doesn't care - she has a bike worth almost as much as the Rabbit that she commutes on so the car mostly just sits 95% of the time. I guess in FL you can do that but up North we sure can't do that because of the weather.

The headliner is now completely sagging throughout the whole cabin. Sucks.

On another note I finally replaced the mirror from getting hit a few months ago. What a pain, have to take the whole door apart.

To replace the side mirror you had to take the whole door apart? Dang. I've taken the mirror covers, mirror, and blinker assemblies off but not the entire assembly. I guess the mirror assembly is buried in the door panels and they need to be removed to get access to the screws and stuff?

Like my sister's mk5 - her entire headliner is like an inverted tent. It's awful.

Yeah basically have to remove the inside panel in order to run the wire that controls the movement and blinkers. It wasn't all that bad, just thought it would be a bit more accessible. Took maybe 45 min at most start to finish. meh.

The headliner issue makes it feel so cheap on the inside and is a constant reminder that it's a beater.

Right when I bought this car it wouldn't stay locked. I'd lock it with the remote and it would unlock right away. The problem went away for about 2 years and now is back.

Not sure how long it's been back honestly but yeah my doors won't lock now. Street parking and living in chicago with a car that doesn't lock sucks.

Getting emissions tested this week and then parking the racecar. It's so quiet now! Time for a eurojet exhaust iono

Replaced the window switch with an oem. Took 2 minutes and cost $23.

The door still won't lock though. At least now I can roll my windows down while the car is running. I'd usually crack the window a but with my keyfob before going in buy it doesn't work while the car is running.

Ahoy,

Dropped in to say I've been enjoying your thread as well. Picked up an 08 Rabbit about a year ago and it's been great, but I also picked it up from a dealer with warranty and nearly full maintenance records. Super clean, but 8 days later a protester climbed on the hood and scratched it and the quarter panel up.
You say the trans mount made a big difference? I get a creaking noise apparently from a clutch spring (according to the dealer when I brought it in under warranty) I'm wondering if BFI Motor/trans mounts will help negate that until I eventually may need to replace the clutch anyway. If not, good to know I should expect an improvement with my shifts. Then I'd just need a chip to get rid of that rev hang.
Test drove a brand new GTI yesterday and it really just felt like an overcomplicated Rabbit with extra power I couldn't use because of the road conditions. (Edit) Sans the crazy torque steer I get in the Rabbit

March for Our Lives

Actually though I used to work on a street between the State Capitol and the nearest high school. I was working and suddenly heard chants outside, when I got outside to move my car it was too late, the cop cars leading the march were already passed my car. Some little shit at the back jumped up on the hood. I wasn't too thrilled, and even less sympathetic to their cause as a result. Though it's a bit unfair to the ones at the front with the signs, chants, and passion that some kid who was just along for the ride to get out of school and cause some trouble gave them a bad image.

Woops just saw this. Yeah the BFI trans mount made a solid difference in shifting. Paired it with a eurojet engine mount.

Long story... but this car is gone and I may never see it again. Finding out in a few days if that's the case or if I'll be shopping for a new daily.

Yep it's gone

Picking up a mk5 Wolfsburg Jetta I think to replace it. If everything checks out on it that is...

Agree. I'll start a new thread for it this week lol.

Lots more potential on the Jetta. Thomas is offering to sell me his k04, tts injectors, an ebay downpipe, and spulen top for $800.

Then all you would need is the tune and upgraded HPFP.
