Sound Deadening Experience?

Hey All,

I pulled my rear seats and I'm going to go with this delete:
http://www.eurokreations.bigcartel.com/product/mk6-rabbit-gti-r32-rear-seat-delete

While I'm at it, I plan on minimizing the road noise that comes from deleting the seats by laying down some of this underneath the delete:
http://www.designengineering.com/category/catalog/boom-mat-acoustical-products/boom-mat-moldable-noise-barrier

and then this on top of the boom mat:

Does anyone have first hand experience with sound dampening on the MK5 and be able to provide insight, recommendations, etc.?

Thanks!

I took almost all the sound deadening out of my car. It got louder, but by far the loudest change was removal of the rear seats.

Dynamat is cheaper than this boom mat stuff.

Was that for weight reduction or another reason?

Weight reduction. My GLI is a skeleton at this point...I've even started removing non structural sheet metal, and have lexan windows in the rear doors which are totally gutted. It's all very loud...just wear earplugs when driving hard or my pilot's headset when cruising to listen to music

One source of noise in the vehicle is generated by the flexing of the body shell and drumming or booming caused by the thin body panels. much of this can be eliminated in the careful design and assembly of the body shell and the use of stiffening ribs in the panels or by the addition of adhesive matting (often bitumen rubber based) to further control panel vibration.

On its introduction the Golf 5 was praised for the design of the shell, the quality of construction and the great increase of stiffness and noise levels compared with its predecessor and other then new vehicles in its class

From personal observation it also appears to come with considerable quantities of well adhered and fitted anti vibration matting throughout the trunk and passenger cabin

For these reasons I would suggest that you skip the first step as unlikely to greatly improve on the existing and go straight to the likely more effective (cost and result) second stage of sound absorbing material beneath the existing carpeting etc

Sound control is something that manufacturers pay a great deal of attention to compared with 30-40 years ago even in economy models as I know from my 1973 Bug

Thanks for the solid advice!! As I have any and all of the chassis reinforcements for these chassis. I don't expect the noise to be generated from flex. As with rear seats out, there is no existing carpet, but a delete setup will be placed on top.

Checkout my audio build thread, I have put down a TON of sound deadener around my car.

I use RAA Audio and that has made a HUGE difference.
The biggest difference was putting it in the spare tire section in the hatch and in the doors.

If you have questions on specifics shoot me a PM
