Only front city lights as DRL - no.

This is NOT DRL, it is city lights selected on a euro switch (euro instruments, NA DRL enabled as fogs).

Haha! I've had my 07 Gli for 3 months and have been waiting for this write up as well. Was almost ready to start a new thread. Thanks, great info.

Thanks all for the acknowledgement. Glad it is still helping others.

Wow, a post that is over eight years old that is still getting good use.
I did spend a bit of time on it back then, seems the effort was worth it.
And how many 8 year old posts do you see
where all the embedded pictures still work?
I maintain my pictures used in posts going back 15 years in some cases,
that organization and effort are still "paying off".

Never understood why this thread was never included in the "stickies",
kudos to those who have searched and keep reviving it.

It definately is one of those rare posts that you bookmark and share whenever the topic comes up.

Glad to see people keep refreshing this thread - it's a good one.

Living in the country, I'd sure like to have both HID's and Halogens blazing on high beam. But have avoided coding the changes, since running a non-USA cluster screws up AM radio, which around here still has pretty valuable content (if you like sports).

For those interested (and as I recall from memory), USA AM radio stations fall on 10KHz increments - like 920, 930, 940, etc. In Europe (I assume due to greater congestion in the old days), they only allow 9KHz between station slots.

So running a Euro cluster in the USA means you've only got a 10% chance that your local AM stations will be exactly on-tune.

...

I believe the change to AM frequencies only impacts the MFD2 DVD,
the standard US market Premium 7 does not experience this issue,
and I know it does not affect US market RNS-510.

Re: inner headlights with high-beam, DRL disable, Fog lights as DRL, Euro instrument

comments below are adjusted to US mk5 r32 which unlike US mk5 GTi, comes stock with auto headlights / auto wipers.
M4DM4X did not post in this thread, he sent a private message,
but if I am going to go to the trouble of answering, I would prefer it be in the public thread ;)

Inner headlights on US market GTI (Bi-Xenon equipped) - function and settings

This was just a fantastic post. I just ordered a set of LED modules that replace the city lights and turn signals in the stock housing, and had a question about how to do the coding to get a desired outcome. I have searched the thread, but did not find the following question/set up. If it is in there and I missed it, then I apologize.

What I would like to have is:
  • with US switch
  • City Lights always on
  • Headlights operated on/off by daylight sensor when switch set to auto
  • Headlights on when switch set to on
  • FTP on with HID highbeams

Is this possible with the US switch?
Probably not.
A euro swtich may be needed to get close to
. . . . • City Lights always on
i.e. City lights always on is not an available setting in the controller.
There are no settings for city lights much beyond intensity.
There may be a misconception there is re-writing code on the controller - that is simply not the case.
We are simply manipulating options included by the manufacturer.
VW typically only offers things needed to customize for optional accessories or specific market requirements.
If a desired function is not required for any factory accessory or regulatory customization,
then it is unlikely it will be an option.
Short of custom wiring, the closest you are going to get to that
is turning city lights on yourself manually via the city light position of a euro switch.

Now if adding new wiring & spoofing resistors along with re-pinning harnesses is a consideration,
the unused front fog light circuit has some intriguing possibilities to achieve • City lights always on
while maintaining a stock US mk5 R32 auto switch

I assume I need the non-US instrument setting, correct?

If you want
. . . . • FTP on with HID highbeams
then yes, non-US instrument is required
I recommend EU / Germany (country code 1)

What other settings do I need?

Just for reference purposes, I have a MKV R32, and here is a link to the LED modules I ordered.

Thanks in advance for your help. And thanks all the same for your time.

I have no comment on the aftermarket LED stuff.

does anyone know of a place in NE Ohio that can set my DRLs to fogs and city lights?
newbie here and love the look of the fogs and city's for DRLs.
