Can I fix this oxidation on my GTI?

Hey Everyone,

I have a 2008 MKV GTI with red paint. Part of my left rear panel is showing oxidation and chipping paint. I don't know if I can fix it by myself

I heard the best way to remove oxidation:

rubbing compound > polish > wax or sealant? I can't find sealant anywhere (or do I even need to do that?)

I have attached some pics

Thank you in advance!

Only see 1 pic but saw others temporarily.

Looks like your clearcoat has deteriorated. Won't hurt to try rubbing compound on it and see if there is any left under there. Try some and you will be able to tell pretty quickly if it is something you can cleanup or something that will require more advanced skills such as sanding/polishing and respray.

Cool, thanks! If I start using rubbing compound and it is my clear coat going bad, what would happen?

Also, if it is all fine (just oxidation)....what would the process be to get rid of the oxidation? Is it rubbing compound > polish > wax? Or do I need to use sealant?

Thanks!

Yes rubbing compound, then polishing compound. Rubbing will cut more and polishing will be finer to return shine. Try 3M products and ideally something like a Porter Cable unit (safer).

To test first just get rubbing compound, and do it by hand, you will quickly be able to tell if it is going to work.

If you are able to return it to a shiny state then just wax it.

Wax and sealant are alternatives for the most part. This site has pretty good explanations of their differences: http://www.autogeekmobile.net/carwax.html

For a daily driver, I'd use sealant or an all-in-one type product.

I think the clear coat is pretty much done. The only way to restore it is by wet sanding or spraying a fresh coat of top coat.
