THE luxury four-wheel-drive Lexus RX330 has been involved in more accidents in Australia than any other car in the past year, data from a leading insurance company reveals.

The popular 2004 Lexus sports wagon, which normally retails for more than $72,000, beat the 2003 Subaru Impreza GX hatchback and 2004 Toyota Camry Sportivo in AAMI's list of top 10 cars involved in accidents where the driver was at fault.

The data was calculated from insurance claims lodged across the country in the past 12 months.

AAMI spokesman Geoff Hughes said he was surprised at the results, as he expected that hotted-up cars driven by young people would have been involved in more accidents than the Lexus.

"It's difficult to make definitive statements, but I suppose the top three cars are sporty vehicles whose owners tend to drive a bit quicker, which causes accidents," Mr Hughes said.

He could not say if the results indicated that four-wheel-drives were harder to drive than the average car or that owners were taking more risks on the roads because they felt invincible when behind the wheel of bigger cars.

A previous AAMI survey of 1880 people had revealed that six in 10 drivers of average-sized cars believed owners of large four-wheel-drives should have special licences because of their comparative difficulty to control.

The Australian National Four-Wheel-Drive Council rejected such a move, claiming drivers rather than vehicles were to blame for most accidents. The council has run accredited four-wheel-drive training courses for more than a decade.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Senior Constable Wendy Willingham said the department would not comment on AAMI's survey because it did not keep statistics on which cars were involved in accidents.

When asked if police believed four-wheel-drives were more dangerous than other cars, or if their owners needed to take greater care on the roads, she said it was department policy not to single out individual makes of cars for criticism.

im surprised that there weren't any "real" sports cars on that list. I would have thought the Subaru WRX and Nissan imports would have topped the list, that or your typical company car ie. commodore, falcon, camry, magna just due to the fact that there are more of them around than any other car.
