I have a '89 MkII GTI 16V RHD on it's way to me now from the UK. It's in excellent condition for the year, and it was free except for freight.

I can't wait to get started on it!

Whhaattt! How did you pull that one

Hey Brandon,

One of my best friends in the UK had it sitting in his garage. It was his very first car a long while back. He was going to turn it into a project car for fun but other things came up and he needed the space. He just bought a Noble M400 and he is working on that. Plus he has a Boxster as a DD so the GTI had to go to make space.

It is in great condition for it's age. Needs some work here and there but runs fine overall. Has 72,000 miles on it. He was reluctantly going to sell it, but it's probably not worth that much over there. So he asked me if I wanted it instead. I jumped at the chance. He knows I will take care of it and do him proud.

I just paid freight from the UK and it will be delivered to my door in about 4-6 weeks hopefully. I will probably turn it into a show car or maybe a fun track car. Even if I don't drive it that often it's nice to have it in my garage just to have a piece of the GTI heritage. Hopefully I can have a MkV GTI parked next to it some day.

I think ,don't quote me but I'm pretty sure this is going to be close.

If you get a car that meets emissions, and crash tests for the model year in which it was produced you can import it.

Problem is anything built outside the country that wasn't imported here probably isn't OBD or crash test compliant (for years in which OBD/Crash tests were in effect). Example Skylines, will not meet crash tests, or OBD, and thats why they cost so much here, because they've been converted.

MKII's meet the crash test requirements, and there was no such thing as OBD back then.

I have a few friends that have old right hand drive Mini's and Defenders, they had to meet the above requirements.

Best example I can think of is the Porsche 959 is completely illegal on American roads. Porsche wouldn't give one up for crash testing, so if you ever see one its not real, unless you see Seinfeld or Bill Gates driving.

Oh yea you can import any car from any where as long as its not going to see street use IE Gates and Seinfeld's 959's, supposedly Gates was spotted driving his a few times, but he's got enough money to pay off god.

the car is over 20 years old it can be imported w/o issues as it meets the "classic" car standard thing, also any car made outside of USA as long as there is a USA version of it that had crash tests done.

I was talking to a guy with a RHD skyline a month or two ago, asking him how he got it into the states and is able to drive it on the streets with registered tags. I dont remember exactly everything he said, but I think it went something like this

He was saying something about to make it completely legal you can bring a rolling chassis over with out an engine.. Then in another shipment just the motor. That way when it goes through customs they cant consider it a full vehicle, and schedule it for DOT approval or for emissions etc before pick it up..

Then when everything is built up you go to get it registered and its considered a "kit car" or something. He was comparing some parts of the process like building up a replica Shelby Cobra kit. Because the Cobra isnt a Ford car, its built up from the ground up(most of the time).

I could be completely wrong, and could have 100% misunderstood him...? But I remember it was something along those lines. If someone knows the process, please correct me!

OP: Be sure to post pictures the second it lands in your driveway
